Hey Portland area followers, we are under a Winter Weather Advisory from 4 PM Monday to 4 PM Tuesday! Stay safe and warm and don't get to close to that fire. I've already burnt my left hand on the glass in front of the fire place this morning (ouch!). When we enter such cold weather we often forget about the hazards beyond the obvious snow. So here are a few tips:
- Open the flue when building fires indoor to provide adequate ventilation and make sure you have had your chimney inspected this year!
- Never try to heat your house with a grill, oven, or gas operated heater indoors! Carbon Monoxide is odorless so don't risk it!
- Bring in any pets and provide shelter for stray animals; this can be a cardboard box with towels or blankets
- Protect any pottery from the freezing temperatures! The freezing and thawing causes cracks that over time will break off!
- Never leave a container full of liquid outside (for me, hummingbird feeders) when they freeze the water expands and can shatter the container.
- Finally, Never touch the glass in front of the fire... it's hot!
